How Did Robert Smythson Influence Elizabethan Architecture
In the past fine architecture was mainly found in Churches, but during the Elizabethan Era when art was flourishing, people began paying more attention to their homes. Robert Smythson was a primary figure in building and designing some of the most elaborate houses of the time, despite the fact that being a professional architect was not yet a profession. His most notable work was Longleat in Wiltshire, a lavish house perfectly exemplifying Elizabethan architecture.

In 1879 a 20-year-old man named Sir Henry Mill Pellatt became locally known for beating the amateur world record for running of the mile. This fueled the ambition and aspiration for success that he seemed to have been born with. Little did he know that in just over 20 years he would own the largest private home in North America. By the time he was thirty Sir Henry owned 21 companies. His newfound money and love of art that came from visits to Europe brought the idea of Casa Loma, a Gothic/Medieval style mansion that overlooks Toronto. It took 3 years to build and yet was only lived in for 10 years. However, it is now one of the most visited tourist destinations in Toronto and the perfect setting for weddings and events as well as movie and TV productions. After looking at the it’s history, character and physical features, Casa Loma’s “sense of place” can be easily defined as romantic, beautiful and a little bit tragic.…

Just four days after his birth on July 15, 1573, Inigo Jones, the great English architect, was baptized at St. Bartholomew-the-Less in Smithfield, England. This was around the same time that the Elizabethan style of architecture was becoming well established (Gotch 6). He was named after his father, a cloth maker, though there is not much known about his childhood or the identity of his mother. However, what is known is that he was one of England's most interesting and notable designers in architecture, influencing the work of those that came after him. He was able to do so by applying Italian ways of thought and methods in is work under the patronage of the King and the Court (Gotch 7).…

Architecture has been around for more than a thousand years. "During the Renaissance, architects trained as humanists helped raise the status of their profession from skilled laborer to artist." ( Wikipedia) They hoped to create structures that would appeal to both emotion and reason. Three figures in Renaissance architects were Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, and Andrea Palladio. We would hope to find within the time capsule a set of plans and notes on such marvels as Florence Cathedral, and other great structures that lead the way for the buildings of today. "In Baroque architecture, new emphasis was placed on bold massing, colonnades, domes, light-and-shade, painterly color effects, and the bold play of volume and void." ( Wikipedia) Such architects as Sir Christopher Wren "an English scientist and architect of the 17th century, most famous for his role in the re-building of London's churches after the Great Fire of London of 1666"( ( Wikipedia), and Nicholas Hawksmoor an British architect. From the past to the present it is a marvel how that was designed and built before modern technology was there to help them construct it. The marvel designs of the past have help in paving the way for the current designs for the future. With technology advancement it is making designing these new advance building much…

An architect that similarly follows the solution that I have proclaimed is William Hablinski. William Hablinski’s Architectural firm on the West Coast of U.S.A follows the classical styles of architecture from ancient Greece and Italy by using scale, detailing, symmetry and proportion in his projects . Hablinkski draws inspiration from Classical Architecture to create residential homes that successfully honour the traditional techniques and concepts of the past whilst still embracing the modern lifestyle of the 21st Century. An example of this is the French Chateau residence in Beverly Hills, California. This project is an interpretation of the Chateau de Maisons, which were built estates around the Ille de France in the late 17th and early…

This can be seen not only through the Classical Arundel marbles in the house, but also through the Classical Palladian architecture in whish it was constructed. The sheer size of the house reinforces the magnificence of the family; however, the plain, simple, regularity of the exterior emphasizes the classical influence displayed. Even thought hid building does not have columns of a typical Roman temple style construction, I still possessed many classical values. It is the buildings symmetry and plain exterior that are classical elements. The incorporation of these features was crucial during the early modern period, because it referenced both the Renaissance movement occurring throughout Europe, and Classical Rome. This displayed that the owner was worldly and aware of cultural movements, not just the ones in England. When the house was being constructed the Herbert family were considered “new men”, and had to prove themselves and their worth, through their collection and the construction of their house. Having a house of classical architecture indicated the family’s noble taste in the excellence, precision, and beauty of Antiquity. It is important to recognize a house as a part of a collection because it is more than just a building. It contains the insight to the family’s intimate, personal…
