The Founding
Rome was created by two brothers named Romulus and Remus on April 21, 753 B.C.. The brothers founded a city and argued about who should be the ruler. Romulus killed his brother Remus and named the city after himself. Rome started off as a slow and strong nation. It grew through trade. This was easy because the location allowed them to use the Tiber river, a close by waterway. Most of Rome's architecture and culture came from the Greeks. The Romans also borrowed the Greeks religion. Eventually …show more content…
Rome started to rely more on war to expand. It was a big deal when Rome defeated the city of Carthage because they were Rome’s biggest trade rival.
After Rome’s first seven kings, starting with Romulus, Junius Brutus founded the Roman Republic, the reason Rome lasted for such a long time. From 214 B.C.-150 B.C. Rome had a series of wars with Greece. If Rome could win they would obtain all of western mediterranean land which they did, and it was a huge accomplishment.
The Civilization
Rome had its ways of life.
In Rome you were one of two people. If you had authority in the republic you were one of the Optimates meaning The Best Men. If you had no authority you were The Populares. It sounds cool but it means The People. The rich had extravagant houses with beautiful oversights with servants catering them. The poor lived in flammable houses made of scrapings hoping to become a slave. In all households though men were the controllers. The father owned the property, and the father decided who their children would marry. The mother looked over the house.
Rome had its fair share of games. One of the most popular events was Gladiating. People would be put in an arena with people surrounding. The people would fight bloodsoking battles to the the death. You could win money and fame. The gladiators were usually slaves but not always. Some gladiators were women. This is one of many entertaining attractions in Rome.
There were also chariot races. They were very expensive, but they grew in attraction and were very profitable. Chariot races were extremely dangerous. To go fast the chariots had to be as light as possible. You could fly off and be trampled to death. There could be 12 racers on a track at once. In chariot racing there were 4 teams and like professional sports today, there were scouts that searched for talented
riders.
The Romans practiced religion with many gods. Gods for trees, for farming, for love, for peace, for war. At dinner time they would throw an offering for the gods. Eventually Rome would become the center of the world for christianity.
THE DOWNFALL
Julius Caesar was known for his ways with the army. He had the most successful military force Rome ever saw.
Julius Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey were together 3 powerful generals all fighting for power and popularity. In 53 B.C. Crassus and his son died trying to defeat the Parthians. Julius caesar and Pompey were left trying to gain power. At the time of Crassus's death Caesar was in Gaul marching through and destroying anyone in his path. Rumors spread in Rome about Caesar’s victories and quickly he was gaining popularity over Pompey. Pompey was jealous and on the way back to Rome, Pompey met Caesar in Greece for civil war, and both armies stayed in their camps and plotted. Caesar's army had a disadvantage. They had 22,000 soldiers and 1,000 cavalry. Pompey had 45,000 soldiers and 7,000 cavalry. Caesar’s army had also been fighting in Gaul for many days and the were tired and hungry. The war was bloody and gruesome and Caesar ended out victorious. Caesar had better formations and well trained soldiers. Caesar’s army also had more trust in him. These are the reasons 22,000 thousand soldiers beat 45,000.
Pompey fled to Egypt and was eventually murdered by his own soldier. Caesar was now loved and adored by Rome’s people. The month July was named after him and he gained so much power that he was becoming like a King to Rome’s people. He was stabbed to death by his own Senate because the feared he would become a King. That’s when Rome veered into an empire. Caesar Augustus was the first official emperor. Next came hundreds of years of emperors which some were logical and well tamed, others were completely insane, which triggered Rome’s fall. When the Senate assassinated Caesar they did it to prevent their republic from turning into a empire. Hundreds of years later the Goths got into Adrianople, Rome's prime city at the time, and took over it. The Gothic invasion took over the whole Eastern Rome. And Rome fell.
Although Eastern Rome fell, Western Rome strived for more than a thousand years later. Eventually barbarians took over. What we can learn from our history is fas cinating, almost extraordinary. Rome is still today the most fascinating empire ever to brew in our history.
