Isaac Newton was born December 25th 1642 in Lincolnshire, New England. (This date was later changed to January 4, 1643 when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in England.) Newton’s parents were Isaac Newton and Hannah Ayscoug. Newton’s father passed away in October 1642, three months before Newton was born. Due to his idle and inattentive behavior his Mother thought it best to make him quit school. He was then brought home to manage his Mother’s affairs and Estate. This too proved to be the wrong decision for Newton. In 1660 Newton was allowed to return to King’s school to finish his education.
On June 5, 1661 Newton started Trinity College Cambridge. Despite the fact that his Mother had the means to pay for his college, Newton was forced to pay for part of his college by working as a sizar. (A sizar was a servant to another student.) It is believed that Newton had Humphrey Babington, a distant relative, as his patron. His Mother arranged this so that Newton would not be subjected to hardship.
During his third year of college, Newton began to question the philosophies of math and science. In 1665, the Great Plague came to Cambridge, causing the university to shut down. Newton was forced to return home to pursue his own study. During this 18-month period he thought up the infinitesimal calculus. Newton set the bases for his theory of light and color, and added important insights regarding the laws of planetary motion. These insights led to the publication of his first book,
