How Did Stephen Harper Affect Canada
Stephen Harper is an important Canadian as he had help Canada in many ways during his years serving as Prime Minister. Stephen Harper was a the conservative party leader and had served as Prime Minister in 2006 to 20015 and he was in politics in 1981. Even tho his reputation in overall good his has also been called the worst Prime Minister. Some of his many good deeds were him apologizing to the Chinese about the head tax and to the Aboriginals as they were also mistreated. Some of his actions were deemed bad as he served as Prime Minister the government denied multiple scientist to speak freely about their research. also affect the world, he didn’t start doing stuff when he became Prime Minister but started early in his career.
Before Stephen Harper was Prime Minister he was already working in politics as he worked for Jim Hawkes who was a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament After Brian Mulroney became Prime Minister in 1984 Harper worked for Hawke for another year until he left displeased with Hawkes. Then in 1988 Harper had ran for a seat in the House of Commons against his former boss but unfortunately lost but after many hardships he had defeated his former boss Hawks and became the MP for Calgary West. After his 4th year as MP he stepped down and and became the head of
NNC (National Citizen Coalition)(Andrew Mcintosh 01/27/2016). While in the NNC Harper had a concern, the concern was that there was little to no respect for the oil-producing province (Alberta) and that it should have some kind protection from the “Aggressive and hostile federal government”
Stephen Harper ash accomplished many things as he served as Prime Minister, during Stephen Harper's first session as Prime Minister he had lowered the tax from 7 percent to 5 percent and he had enforced tougher security around the world.
“Combatting crime and terrorism became watchwords of the Harper government” (Andrew Mcintosh 01/27/2016) that had lead to the Canadian government in help other country such as Afghanistan. Another reason Stephen Harper was one of the greatest Canadians is because “he became the first sitting prime minister to visit the front lines of a combat operation when he went to Ma’sum Ghar, Afghanistan in May 2007.”(Andrew Mcintosh 01/27/2016), that meant that he had not only helping Afghanistan he was directly helping them. He then helped Afghanistan enforce the police force in Afghanistan as he had extended Canada’s combat role in Feb 2009 to to Dec 2011 (Andrew Mcintosh 01/27/2016). The Canadian government had also created worse/longer punishment for those who break the law by having longer sentences as such (Andrew Mcintosh 01/27/2016) During his second run as Prime Minister he had “Harper’s government then delivered $45 billion in federal stimulus spending between 2009 and 2012. This resulted in the first federal deficits in a decade but assisted Canada in emerging from the financial crisis” this made Canada on its steady legs after the oil prices have decreased
significantly.
Even tho Stephen Harper had done so much for Canada some still believed that he was worse Prime Minister in Canada because of the fact that the government had stopped “Numerous scientists have been prevented from speaking to the media, especially those researching the environment.”(Bruce Livesey May 18th 2015). This was a sign on the Harper government doing bad deeds. It was also said that the Harper Government was spying on first nations (Bruce Livesey May 18th 2015). One of Stephen Harper's worst move was denying to let a women wear a niqab to a citizenship ceremony, this made Stephen Harper lose many seats and ultimately lost to Justin Trudeau in the 2015 elections.
