The slaves were bound to revolt at any time to to harsh conditions, and Some slaves heard a rumor that Louis XVI had freed them in 1789. Additionally, the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen gave hope to both the gens de couleur libres and to the slaves that they would be given more liberties. Napoleon was good ruler, but lacked the basic skills to undertake France. It wasn’t until then when france officially abolished slavery in 1794. Moreover, Napoleon knew that sugar was the most profitable money maker in Haiti, and realized he had to reinstate slavery under his rule. Napoleon officially reinstated slavery in 1802 and many were upset with his choice to bring back slavery.
