The Civil Rights Movement The civil rights movement was an event that happened in history and is still happening today. How did it make a change today? The civil rights movement is an event in history that created a lack of change in world culture through multiple attacks on people demonstrating we are still not all equal. Before the Civil Rights movement, there was segregation and unfair treatment of people based on skin color.“Black people living or traveling in the South faced "whites only" sections in restaurants—if they could enter the restaurant at all, segregated drinking fountains, prohibitions on sleeping in hotels, and were often banned from restrooms—even if no other option existed” (Dirksen). …show more content…
They did it in so many public places such as bathrooms, restaurants, and more. It was unfair to black people because they sometimes couldn’t even go to the bathroom even if they needed to go.“Real estate agents could—by law—refuse to show homes in "white" neighborhoods to prospective black buyers, and landlords could reject applicants based on race” (Dirksen). This was unfair treatment because real estate agents could refuse to legally show them homes in “white” neighborhoods. A white person killed 9 innocent black people “just because they were black”. People still think that black people are inferior and they should be slaves. “A good example of this systemic racism, according to the African Canadian Legal Clinic, is racial profiling -- the hidden assumption here is that individual characteristics indicate tendencies to engage in illegal activities” (Ontario) This is an excellent example for how racism still exists today. There are attacks on people of color because they look like they are stealing or hurting somebody. Some people, if they look at people of color, they think they are terrorists or thieves. “Those who work in the social change processes understand social and attitudinal change does not occur overnight, but talk is cheap when there is lack of follow-up” (Ontario). There might be a lot of talk saying that we beat racism. Although we have come a long way, we have not “beat” racism or overcome it. We still have a long way to go to fully replace it. I believe that the Civil Rights Movement did not make a change today. Even though such things have been solved, such as being separated by using different bathrooms and such, there are
