The hawks felt the United States should do whatever they could to keep control in South Vietnam so North Vietnam would not overtake. Therefore, within our nation there were two different views about the Vietnam War and these differences led to protests and animosity regarding the war.
Next the Vietcong also viewed the war in different perspectives. The Vietcong, the name of the members of the Communist guerrilla warfare group that fought with the
North Vietnamese, were often as scared of the jungle as the United States troops. They were fighting the war for independence and few actually were Communists. The Vietcong were inexperienced soldiers who often had to be trained in the fields. They experienced much sorrow and grief for all of the lost lives of their relatives in the war. The Vietcong took whatever scraps of weapons they could find because the Soviet Union and North Vietnamese had the best equipment.
Whereas, the South Vietnamese had a different perspective of the war. They experienced low morale because the Americans were fighting their war. They often questioned why should they be fighting in the war when the Americans were doing the fighting for them. The South Vietnamese wanted to remain with their old ways, and it was difficult for the Americans to help them at times. They also were concerned about the dependence of their people on the United States. Others thought that the incidents that occurred in the war were caused by the cultural differences and the lack of cultural knowledge of the United States. In addition they thought the American underestimated the war and they didn’t realize the North Vietnamese would fight to the end.
