In this case, they were their own worst enemies and never knew it. With its overpowering military, conquering land was an easy task for the Romans. Keeping control of it, however, was the difficult part. In result, communication started to fade from one side of the empire to the other, making it increasingly hard to protect from invading forces (Fulford 295). This also lead to an unhappiness for a majority of the people in the empire. They were becoming shut out of the major cities, so a lifestyle of sadness became normal (Fulford 295). Rome ended up becoming a dictatorship for its military and there were less people willing to fight for them (Stewart 137). The legions, armies rather, weren’t loyal to the government, but rather to their own groups which caused the inevitable to happen (Stewart 137). The inevitable being a drop in patriotism. This led to the government having to hire mercenaries to fight for them, which is a big problem in and of itself (Stewart 138).
