The Fisher family hurt Paul in many unforgettable ways. Their goal was to only make Paul’s life easier but that decision went the wrong way. Even with the help of teachers and doctors, the Fisher family still caused issues. Erik,Mrs.Fisher, and Mr.Fisher’s choices impacted Paul by hurting him, questioning himself, and getting bullied by kids.
A person that impacted Paul the most was Erik. Ever since Paul was a young boy he was always abused by his brother. One day in his hometown of Houston,Texas Paul was claimed to tell on Erik’s best friend, Castor, who painted on walls. Paul didn’t understand what was going on but Erik was mad. Erik decided to pry open Paul’s eyes and hold his arms back while Castor sprayed white paint into his eyes. Erik made this choice out of anger and never realized the impact it had on Paul when he got older. His mom,Mrs.Fisher, was responsible for Paul to question himself. When Erik brought up a familiar word when shouting at Paul he realized that it had something to do with his eyes. Eventually, Paul realized that the solar eclipse was a lie. When Paul came home he knew that he had to ask his parents about what really happened. After Paul asked his parents his mom burst into tears first. She then kept on spilling every detail about Paul’s eyes. Paul was very mad and sad about what his mom chose to do. What happened in Tangerine that was symbolic was, Paul was shopping with his mom for new clothes and a new uniform for St. Joseph's (Paul’s new private school), while he was there his mom bought everything from socks to everything he ever wanted. He kept talking about what he was getting like he was getting a fresh start on the world, in a new school, as if his old clothes were that past…

Throughout the book Paul is always having to deal with his violent older brother and his friend Arthur Bauer and Paul never tells anyone what he is seeing his brother do. There is one external force that helps convince Paul to finally tell someone. Towards the end of the book Antoine Thomas said to Paul, “The truth shall set you free.” This quote is important to the book because this is when Paul is convinced to tell the truth about the real Erik Fisher. This is what I think is one of the most important quotes to the resolution of the…

At one point in the book the main character Paul was forced to lay in a trench with a dead Russian soldier. This was one of the most obvious turning points for him and his mind. He had to kill this man with hand-to-hand combat and then lay there looking at him for days. The guilt ate him alive, especially when he found out he had a whole family at home. From that point on he lost hope. Even his friend’s did just from hearing about it. One would rather be killed than losing a leg. Everything hits them harder after that.…

Paul used to be a very sensitive and compassionate young man, who used to enjoy and write poetry before the war. However, all of this changed, as his time in the army made him completely detached from his feelings, disenabling him to experience certain feelings and emotions in the future. Paul describes his new self by saying, “We are dead men with no feelings, who are able by some trick, some dangerous magic, to keep on running and keep on killing.” Paul learned to take his mind completely off his feelings and emotions due to the terror of the war, and the shock of several events he witnessed, and insinuates that they have been transformed into ‘killing machines’. This once again demonstrates that Paul is a character of his time, as he demonstrates intense emotional coldness. The first indication that Paul is unable to mourn his comrades is found when Kemmerich’s death brings him down, but he is still not as depressed as one would be with the death of a…

Is that who I am? Am I that idiot?" Paul is weak because he thinks he is prevented from doing anything because he started at an eclipse and lost his eyesight. Paul is bullied by his older brother and his friends for apparently losing his eyesight from staring at an “eclipse”. As a result of this is does not feel confident in himself because he knows more people will start calling him names if they also find out. In addition, there is one quote in particular that catches my eye and this quote is “As usual when Erik appears, the attention switched from me to him”. Of course all the attention is moved to an older boy who actually has a chance at sports. Paul is ashamed and disappointed that his father is more worried about the Erik Fisher football dream. He is mad also because he thinks his dad knows much more about Erik’s sport than his dad knows about his sport. One time he says to his dad that he doesn't pay attention to him, but then his dad says he does pay attention to Paul when it's Paul’s sports season, then Paul says that he and Erik have the same sports season and they both play sports at the same time. “I burst through the front of the door, crying hysterically.” This just goes to show that Paul Fisher does not have a lot of self confidence and self esteem. In the beginning of the book Paul believes he is a no one. Paul follows what other people do because he is afraid to…

As a result we can tell that Erik made the biggest choice that impacted Paul the most. In the beginning of the story Paul was dead afraid of Erik and his harmful violence. Erik’s violence caused a lot of damage to loved ones and relationships that were very important to Paul. What important here is that Paul overcame his fear about his brother and was brave enough to tell the truth about Erik so nobody else would get hurt. To conclude, we may never be able to control the choices of others, but we can always choose our own choices- avoiding…

If Mom and Dad had Erik take responsibility, he would know it was not okay to do that to Paul and would not treat Paul harshly again. If they had punished him for the things he had done wrong instead of ignoring them, Paul would tell the truth, as well. Their decision significantly affected Paul’s life negatively in Tangerine and essentially ruined his childhood. The choice of not punishing Erik for his wrongdoings are the reason why Paul never told the truth, as he knew that telling the truth would result in excuses from his parents.…

Throughout this story it is apparent Paul does not wish to slowly progress into perfection instead, Paul wants to experience instant gratification and while doing so Paul wants to move his way to the top and remain at the top. One down fall for Paul is that his method of personal achievement is attempted by being deceitful, telling lies to everyone that surrounds him including his teachers, his elders, and his father. Paul had the struggle of being successful yet, because of his hast, Paul was about to fail. In doing so, “he stood watching the approaching locomotive, his teeth chattering, his lips drawn away from them in a frightened smile; once or twice he glanced nervously sidewise, as though he were being watched.” (65).
