Due to the brilliant ideas of the Greeks and Romans, we have them to thank for our everyday laws that protect us from the government and prevents them from becoming too powerful. The Greeks were formed into a strong government that would grow their culture and ideas as a whole. Pericles, and Athenian politician, believed that the citizens had rights and responsibility not for only themselves but also to their empire. They were one of the first people to ever come up with a democracy, but only male citizens could participate in political situations. The male citizens were also expected to help defend Athens, serve on a jury, and participate in debates about issues. He believed that if the male citizens weren’t into politics then they should just leave. ( Document 1) This is how serious a good political government was viewed in these times, and the Greeks put down stepping stones for us to build upon them, but also use them in our country
