The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural , social and artistic explosion that took place in the city of Harlem right after the conclusion of World War I. During this time period Harlem was a cultural center and a haven that drew a variety of black writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets, and scholars. This movement allowed them not only to do what they loved but it allowed them to thrive, contributing and collaborating with each other producing works that had yet to be seen by the world. At the time this occurred blacks were looked down upon by their white counterparts, being shunned, at times even thought to be inferior. This hostile environment was not ideal for any type of progress but in Harlem this was not an issue. The artist's protected each other. They encouraged the exchange of knowledge and wisdom by anyone who was willing to contribute. Slowly as word begin to spread more brilliant minds began to flock to Harlem and it’s wonders. Slowly even whites were attracted to Harlem for its brilliant works being produced, its progressive way of thinking, and its delightful night life. It brought together people of different races and freed them from some of the racial discrimination they faced elsewhere. It placed a spotlight on different forms of art and expression that had previously gone unknown to the world. It showed the world that no matter what race you belong to everyone is capable of brilliance. Not only that it also it also laid the foundation to an unsegregated future, where people of all colors can get along.
