Any land that the Irish owned was confiscated by the English, they couldn’t own their own land. In 1783, the Irish became willing immigrants so that they could own land once again and have a chance at a brighter future. America was the land of liberty and the land of freedom, which is what the Irish were seeking to gain. When they first migrated the more popular
state was South Carolina because they could purchase land almost at no cost.
In addition, the Irish were seeking freedom to practice their religion. The Irish always seemed to migrate in phases. In the 1800s one first phase of Irish were already well established in America. They would even make sure they weren’t confused with the new Catholic Irish Immigrants. The old Irish would identify themselves ad Scott Irish, so that they weren’t confused with the Catholic Irish. The old Irish would also identify themselves as American/Anglo.
In America, the Irish now had freedom to participate in politics. In 1790 America had its official first census. It revealed that 44 thousand were born Irish and half a million were of Irish decent. The Irish had a strong presence in America. Andrew Jackson was the first President of Irish decent. Andrew Jackson represented the common man. In New York, Irish immigrants were recruited when they were dropped off by the boats that brought them into America. The Irish helped fight in the war.
The Irish traveled to America to have the freedom that was taken away from them in their own land. They made sure to succeed and a land that had now given them a second chance at a brighter future.
