The author increased the pace in the story a lot. For example “Suddenly from the opposite roof a shot rang out and the sniper dropped his rifle with a cruse.”( O’Flaherty 1) This quote helps create…
In this essay “How to Read Like a Writer” Mike Bunn, claims that college students should distinguish choices the writer made and decide whether they want to implement them in their writing; enhancing their level of writing. Bunn explains that reading like a writer is a strategy that questions, analyses and criticizes a text to make readers look at the structure, the style, the word choice in regards to several factors like: the purpose, the audience, and the genre. The author concludes that this strategy will also signal the writer’s argument. The essay ends by providing a step-by-step example to obtain structural analysis and familiarize students with this strategy.…
One technique that is practiced amongst many schools of writing is known as realism. Realism strives to denote a specific issue and this technique accomplishes its purpose through presenting to the reader a character who is put into a very realistic setting. In realism, the author doesn’t like to use complex syntax to confuse the reader, but instead hopes to achieve his/her point by getting straight to the purpose in the piece they are writing. An example of where this technique is used to full effect is a piece written by Ambrose Bierce known as “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. The short story talks about Farquhar who is sentenced to death but throughout the whole story the…
Modernists were authors that broke away from many traditional standards of writing during the post World War I time period of the Lost Generation. “T.S. Eliot stated that, the inherited mode of ordering a literary work, which assumed a relatively coherent and stable social order, could not accord with the ‘immense panorama of futility and anarchy which is contemporary history.’ Major works of modernist fiction, then, subvert the basic conventions of earlier prose fiction by breaking up the narrative continuity, departing from the standard ways of representing characters, and violating traditional syntax and coherence of narrative language by the use of stream of consciousness and other innovative modes of narration” (Abrams A Glossary of Literary Terms). In The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway uses theme, structure, style, symbols and metaphors to “break up the narrative continuity,” “depart from standard ways of representing characters,” “violate the traditional syntax and coherence of narrative language,” and represents an “immense panorama of futility and anarchy.” Because Hemingway uses these methods to break away from traditional standards, he is therefore a modernist.…
It is his works, such as Hills like White Elephants, which subtly address modern issues that bring forth the question of morality and purpose to a general population (A Farewell to Arms, 3). It is his short, direct style, exemplified by his six word story “Baby shoes for sale, never worn.”, allows for a clear and deep expression of emotion (A Farewell to Arms, 4). His involvement of incorporating the reader through active reading breaks an emotional barrier set forth by usual text. This action allows for the reader to directly examine Hemingway’s characters, and thus reflect on their own behavior. Hemingway’s mastery of language, subsequent to his fluency in the Romantic languages, allows his works to be overall reflective of human behavior and relate to the reader in an emotional context (A Farewell To Arms,…
Does Ernest Hemingway’s use of direct presentation of the subjects; simple, direct language, and compression make it impossible for the audience to emotionally connect to the story? Most writer’s goal is to intrigue their readers with their work. They want their reader to connect, emotionally, they want their complete attention. For this to happen you must be interesting, paint pictures in their minds, get them involved in the reading, build a relationship, and tell a story! Although Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills like White Elephants” has great use of direct language, direct presentation of subjects, amazing characterization…

Imagery is one of Hemingway's most effective tools in conveying the central meaning of the story, "Hills Like White Elephants". His vivid language and articulate descriptions of the scenery…
The narrative convention of style or mood is a major component which represents the theme of deception. This refers to the way the text is written, which is one of the main features that informs the reader as to what kind of person the main character is. If written in third person, style or mood gives the reader a sense of what the narrator is like. Often, this convention influences the story, for example; if the mood is dark, the plot cannot have the main character riding on a unicorn, it would not make sense. The style or mood of Killer is very dark and gruesome. This is because the main character is a cat that murders rats and eventually kills a neighbour’s budgie. An example from the text which tells the reader about the style or mood is, “she twisted and turned and struggled but he got her, he finished her.” Another sentence which expresses this is, “he kept himself to himself and so did his women”. Without this crucial element, the story wouldn’t be the same as this is the foundation to the text.…
The style is short and to the point to make it an easy read, but it makes the reader thing deeply into the text. Also the story could be taken in so many different ways, but it’s all up to the reader. In “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, he conveys a story that seems about something small, but it has so much effect in it. Hemingway uses repetition to emphasize certain words, the use of extended metaphors to avoid the big idea, and symbolism to craft a dialogue based story that is so much more than it…
The stylistic elements that an author chooses are instrumental in ensuring that the theme or tone that he or she wishes to convey is in fact conveyed to the reader. Harper Lee obviously realizes this, for in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird, [New York: Warner, 1982] 278) she wisely selects a distinctive style to relate the moving story of a young child discovering harsh truths regarding human nature…
Hemingway starts the story right in the middle because you don’t really know what’s happening or what’s going on. All you know is that there is a girl who’s traveling with an American man and they are trying to get to Madrid. Through the whole story the two are having a conversation while waiting for the train. They are talking about life, how bad the alcohol tastes, and how the valley looks like white elephants.…

“The Inaugural Address of John F. Kennedy is considered one of the greatest speeches in twentieth-century American public address. Communication scholars have ranked the speech second in a list of the hundred "top speeches" of the twentieth century based on its impact and artistry” (1). This speech, spoken by a young president to the nation after a close and divisive election, is one of the most ‘analyzed’ speeches of all time. When analyzing a prose style, one most look at many things. The kind of diction used throughout the speech needs to be looked over. Also, the length, kind and variety of sentences including figures or speech throughout should be analyzed. Lastly, one must address paragraphing when analyzing the style of a speech. There are many features of style about which we might never be able to secure general agreement, but if there is to be a system for analyzing prose style we must start with those features that are obvious.…
