The civilization was discovered to have been around since 1800 B.C. and have had various encounters with outside civilizations and explorers such as Christopher Columbus (History.com). They had originated from a Yucatan and Oaxaca, southern and northern regions of what is known to be present-day Mexico, but the trail of Mayan civilization tells explorers that they were not a group of natives that only stayed in their native lands, but had spread wide and far amongst the Americas (Cartwright). Their civilization had lasted for about 1600 years going through internal and external factors, from environmental disasters to wars with foreigners; but came to a mysterious full collapse by 250 A.D.
Mayan cities like Palenque, Tikal, and Cópan, were all very powerful, populated, and important, but, over time, they were pushed into collapse because of different environmental reasons or forces from the people beyond the control of the Mayan
