In Redemption: Last Battle of the Civil War by Nicholas Lemann a new idea called reconstruction is starting to arise in the nation. The book itself sets up the reader to picture one of the bloodiest wars of all time. The main idea of the book is how Reconstruction failed because of hostile and rude schemes by the Democratic Party and white southerners during elections. The main reason for reconstruction was to put union backs together and free the slaves for once and for all, the ideas were doomed soon as they were looked upon due to the. Southern Democrats were poised to win with little to no interference at the ballot box both locally and eventually, at the national…
At the end of the American Civil War, most of the factories, farms, and cities in the South had been devastated. In a process known as the Reconstruction, the federal government began to rebuild the war-torn South. The government also sought to restore the relationship of the South with the Union.…
Seriously pissed off Radical Republicans and Congress, resulting the uniting of moderate and Radical Republicans, Congressional Reconstruction. The end result was radical reconstruction of the south.…
Who killed Reconstruction? Isn’t that the big question. North or South, who do you side with. North with their neglect or south with their resistance against Reconstruction. What is Reconstruction? Reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War, 1876 to be exact, where the slaves are free and trying to get jobs, fix their lives, get control again; they even made governments with both white and blacks, schools for black kids. That dream die fast though. So who did kill the Reconstruction, northern neglect or southern resistance?…
The South ended reconstruction because there was lack of interest in equal rights and the violence they had towards the blacks and the North. The south was filled with Ku Klux Klan members and all they did was either threaten, attack, or kill the people who were apart of reconstructing or helping during reconstruction. They were ready to put an end to the movements of the northerners who fled to the south to help the free blacks, scalawags, and the carpetbaggers. They started by targeting black officials and people who were in power. Hints why Abram Colby was attacked.…
The Union lack of military success, the change of northern public opinion, the added strength and resupply of men the freed slaves would provide were…
Reconstruction was a struggle to define the meaning of freedom. Northern leaders faced a variety of problems. Many northerners believed that the South should be punished for their actions and that the region should be transformed into the North’s urbanized image. As for reconstruction, conservatives wanted the South to accept abolition. The Radicals urged for the punishment of Confederate leaders and the aid of freemen.…
The Reconstruction Era had caused many problems among the black people, the south, and the North (The Union). During this Reconstruction Era the South had found any possible loopholes that they could use to take black people’s rights away such as needing to do a literature test before voting, and used their power to scare and threaten black people into doing what they had wanted. To what length did the south destroy Reconstruction? The south had killed Reconstruction by using any and all loopholes they found, and abused power knowing they wouldn’t have consequences. During the Reconstruction Era there were many ways that the South had managed to destroy Reconstruction.…
Arguably the most revolutionary decision America has ever made: Reconstruction. Reconstruction was the process of freeing black slaves and “rebuilding America”. It was doomed from the start, but who destroyed it? That’s a difficult question, as it could easily be the South or the North that doomed black people for nearly 100 years. The Southerners resisted Reconstruction a lot; the Klu Klux Klan was formed [and still exists today], political cartoons showed people who supported Reconstruction as stupid or evil, and they created the Compromise of 1877. It could also be the North, because after a while they just stopped caring. Although they had won the war and had control over the South, it became a lot of effort and work to try to free the blacks and undo the damage. Personally, I think that Northern neglect is what truly put an end to Reconstruction.…
The reason why it became a big ruckus is because the southern blacks were not educated at all they did not even know how to read nor write. So they lost interest in the reconstruction as well because they could not all vote if they did not know how to or who to vote for. So they just voted for the better and hope that the greatest comes out of the reconstruction. So now the south and north were both getting to each other's conditions and adapt with the large of amount of blacks there were that were not all well educated and did not know what to do with them.…
Why did the Reconstruction go South? The Reconstruction demolition of the South did not goes as planned; instead of striving forward everything went south. The North proceeded with their plan of making the slaves into freedman by complete destruction of the South.…
Following the culmination of the Civil War, issues regarding the restoration of seceded states to the Union, the emancipation of slaves, and the overall re-development of political institutions in the nation prevailed. The idea of Reconstruction was proposed to political officials in late 1865, when the effects of the tumultuous Civil War were at its most devastating. The various enactments of the period were deemed void and not actively enforced. Democratic and Republican political parties refused to meet resolutions, imperative to the reconstruction of the nation’s governmental structure. The economy was in an absolute distress, and emancipated blacks faced considerable amounts of opposition. Social, economic, and political policies instituted during the Reconstruction Era are deemed failures due to the burden of racial segregation, economic distress, party discrepancies, and the lack of effective enforcement.…
There were many factors that contributed to the end of the Reconstruction. There were disagreements over the 1876 presidential election. There was increased violence from groups like the Ku Klux Klan. The changing of political climates and violence were leading factors of the end of the Reconstruction era. The end of the era ultimately came in 1877.…

People were getting high up jobs in government solely based on the fact that they had connections. This led to the inexperienced people being bought out and swayed to certain sides that shouldn’t be in power. All of this corruption led to poorly managed cities, overtly lackadaisical regulation of business and the economy. The effects of these issues were so widespread that huge amounts of people began calling for reforms. Joseph L. Bristow a republican senator from Kansas proposed the final draft of an amendment to require all senators to be elected by popular vote.…
