in the Soviet Union. Stalin went to great lengths to allow him to gain power, he murdered millions of his own people remain in authority. The influence of these leaders and political systems had a crucial effect on their citizens and their nation. Louis XIV ruled as the absolute monarch of France between the years 1643 and 1715. Within these years, he benefited his country France at the expense of going against his own people, which is what a monarch should avoid doing. Louis XIV disregarded the estates general and governed without them. Document 1 says, “Louis was therefore free to collect taxes and use the money as he saw fit…”(Doc 1). This shows that Louis XIV did what he believed would benefit his country without consulting anyone about it, he disregarded the 3rd estate, which eventually led them to rise up and revolt against their king, causing the French Revolution. With the money that Louis XIV gained from over taxing the 3rd estate was beneficial for the country. It led to building a bigger and stronger army. The French military increased from 30,000 in 1659 to about 400,000 in 1690 (Doc 2). This is one of the most advantageous things that a ruler can ask for, but if the ruler is anything like Louis XIV then they will lose these types of things in a snap of a finger. Once Louis XIV obtained his powerful army, he went into war three times in order to obtain more power and an effort of territorial expansion, these wars were called France vs. Spain, The Dutch War and the War of the Spanish Succession. The outcome of all three wars left France and its military wreckage. As a result, Louis XIV did benefit France by over taxing the 3rd estate, but because of his arrogance he caused the French Revolution and three other avoidable wars. Louis XIV was the main reason of suffrage during the late 1600s all the way through the early 1700s.
He collected taxes without the consent of the estates general in order establish many things, fund a series of wars, build a bigger and stronger military and to build his palace, the Palace of Versailles, when it was built he insisted that the nobles spend more time there (Doc 2). This eventually led the nobles into debt because they spent most of their time and money at the Palace of Versailles. The nobles being in debt meant that they lost status and power, which ultimately fed the basis for the French Revolution. Document 3 states; “The aftermath of the revocation was disastrous for France. Many of those who abjured [gave up] their Protestant religion repented of their weakness.”(Doc 3) This demonstrates that the removal of the Edict of Nantes drove people insane because it granted the people France substantial rights, however when the rights were removed by Louis XIV people became infuriated, which is another reason to why the French Revolution occurred. Fundamentally, the actions that Louis XIV took had a great impact towards his people. His actions ultimately led the people of France initiate the French Revolution, which left France and its people at a vulnerable
state. Joseph Stalin was the ruthless dictator of the Soviet Union, who established a modern totalitarian government in Russia because of the harsh state that Russia was in during WWI. The totalitarian government helped the Soviet Union maintain order between the country and its citizens. Joseph Stalin is one of the many dictators that loved power, and would do anything to obtain more of it. Document 4b states, “Stalin and the left-wing of the party forced Trotsky to resign his post as war commissar. Stalin worked with the right-wing of the party to weaken the left-wing.”(Doc 4b) This shows that Stalin took over both the left wing and the right wing of the parties, and in doing so rose to great power. With this newfound power Stalin replaced Lenin’s new economic policy with his five-year plan, he also cut the food supply to Ukraine causing the Holodomor, which led to the death of millions. Document 6b says, “…an enormous build-up of heavy industry at the expense of food supplies.”(Doc 6b) This demonstrates that Stalin’s use of a command economy had drastically benefited the Soviet Union, but at the cost of millions of deaths because of the famine that the lack of food caused. Document 6a even shows the millions of tons of pig iron exponentially increasing and the millions of cattle decreasing and increasing at a random rate, between the years of 1920-1940 (Doc 6a). Although, Stalin’s 5-year plan did dramatically benefit the economy of the Soviet Union, in return millions of lives were harmed among the benefits that Stalin brought.
