At the end of World War II the role of the American woman had significantly changed. Women were faced with the difficult decision of staying in the workplace or reclaiming their role as housewife. Women accounted for 40 percent of the aircraft industry during the war. Many women found themselves out of work after the war, however, many of them wished to remain in the workforce. Marriage became increasingly popular and with soldiers returning home pregnancies increased as well. Nonetheless, some women were not content going back into the kitchen and previously solid marriages ended in divorce.
