How Did The United States Dominate South Korea

During World War II, the Korean peninsula was under the control of Japan. It was decided that after the war at the Yalta Conference that the land would be split in two at the 38th parallel. The Soviet Union would have control over North Korea, while the United States would have control South Korea. It was intended that these two nations would once again reunite; however, because of their differences, these two nations could not agree on one way of government. In 1950, North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and with the help of Soviet weaponry, were able to push back South Korea until almost all of South Korea had been taken over. The United States needed to get involved quickly to stop the communism from spreading further and to prevent the Domino Theory, that when one country in a region falls to communism the rest will. As President Truman said, “If we are faithful to our ideals and mindful of our interests in establishing peaceful and prosperous conditions in the world, we will not fail to provide the aid which is so essential to Korea at this critical time.” The Korean War proved to be quite the struggle for the soldiers the United States sent to assist South Korea.
