The Wright Brothers The Wright Brothers created the first working airplane in 1903. Orville and Wilbur Wright were self taught. They did not go to college and learned how to fix things by watching their mother when they were growing up. This knowledge led to them inventing many gadgets and also began the age of flight. The Wright Brothers are an excellent examples of American revolutionaries because they changed the way we travel, changed the way wars are fought, and contributed to the new convenient way of life we have now in America. Before the airplane, we relied on trains to travel long distances. What used to take weeks by train can now be done in a little over 5 hours by plane. Traveling is now a major part of the world’s culture. We are able to experience different cultures and explore our planet, which would never be easy if we did not have airplanes. Changing the way we travel led to many advances including the way we fight wars. Planes have played a huge part in the way wars are fought. At the beginning of World War I, airplanes were still developing and could only do very simple things. First, they were used to fly over enemy territory to see what their terrain looked like. Then, they brought up cameras to capture exaclty what it looke dlike. “ Aerial photography developed into an indispensible tool to guide artillery attacks and assess damage afterward”(Taylor). Another war the Orville and Wilbur’s invention shaped wars was through filght missions. Planes could carry bombs and guns to fight from the air, which can be very effective. “The fighters from one side would go up looking for the fighters from the other side, and intense air combat would take place, with many planes involved….faster and more agile, with longer range and higher speed”(Trims). Wars were being fought very different because not everything was done on the ground and surprise attacks were easier.
