Thomas Edison was one of the first inventores to apply the idea of mass production along with large-scale teamwork to the process of invention. Because of that he is often credited of the first industrial research laboratory. Edison holds 1,093 U.S. patents in his name. He also holds many other patents in the United Kingdom, France and and Germany. More amazing than the amount of patents Edison holds in his name is the worldwide impact of his inventions …show more content…
Those invention including the electric light, power utilities, sound recording, and motion pictures.
All those inventions established major new industries worldwide. Edison’s inventions help to spread mass communication in particular telecommunication. His advanced work in these fields was an outgrowth of his early career as a telegraph operator. Edison later invented electric power generation and distribution to homes, businesses, and factories. This was a critical development to the modern industrial world.
At the beginning of edison's career he worked in Newark, New Jersey. The invention that first grabbed the public's interest was the phonograph in 1877. The invention was so unexpected by the people that it felt as if it almost appeared to them like magic. From that point on edison was known as the “The Wizard of Menlo Park”, New
Jersey.
Edison’s major innovation was his establishment of a industrial research lab. This lab was located in Menlo Park. Which was located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Which is now named Edison in his honor. After his demonstration of the telegraph edison was not sure of his original plan to sell the invention for 4,000-5,000 dollars was right or not. He asked western union bank to make an offer on the invention.
Much to his surprise they made an offer of 10,000 dollars. Which is worth 216,300 dollars in today's dollars. He obviously greatly accepted the offer. Edison’s first huge big financial success was the quadruplex telegraph. Menlo Park became the first institution set up with the specific purpose of producing constant technological innovation and improvement.
In 1878, edison began working on a system of electrical illumination. He had hope that his soon to come invention would be able to compete with gas and oil based lighting. Edison realized that to connect a series of electric lights to an economically manageable size and using the necessary thickness of copper wire. He would have to develop a lamp that used a low amount of current. This lamp must have high resistance and use relatively low voltage around 110 volts.
Edison was also awarded a patent for the motion picture camera or kinetograph. He did the electromechanical design while his employee a photographer, worked on the photographic and optical development. In 1891, Thomas Edison built a Kinetoscope or peephole viewer. This invention was placed in penny arcades where people were able to watch short films.
Thomas Edison was a huge huge reason as to why we are able to live the way we live today. He is responsible for many different careers we have in today's society. He was responsible for so many of inventions that we still use in today’s society. Without him we could have been left in the dark about many things for many years until someone else figured it out.
