The writer uses a few different techniques in order to make the story King Schahrair interesting, the main way is the way he uses a fairy tale narrative structure. The writer also uses a circular narrative structure within the story, he does this by using the adverb 'tenderly' to describe the relationship between King Schahrair and his brother. This is an important factor because he again uses the word 'tenderly' at the end to describe the relationship between Scheherazade and her sister, Dinarzade. This alludes to the happy ever after at the end of the story, but as the story is from a collection of stories, we as a reader must read on to find out if she lives.
Furthermore, the writer uses a complex opening sentence which is resonant of the opening 'once up on a time' fairy tale sentence 'In the chronicles of the ancient dynasty of the Sassanidae...', this makes the story interesting as it intrigues the reader. The opening also sets the scene for the story, the writer includes history of the area, 'dynasty of the Sassanidae, who reigned for about four hundred years' and by doing this he thoroughly sets the scene. The tragic hero is King Schahrair, he is a tragic hero because he starts as a man that people looked up to. He was also a kind man, I know this because he 'cut off the country of Great Tartary... and made his brother king.' This all changed when his wife 'deceived him completely', the start of his big mistake was when he made the decision to 'put her to death' which resulted in 'a girl married and a wife dead' every day because he thought 'all women were as wicked as the sultana'.
