Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia in December 28, 1865. His father was a confederate who supported slavery. Wilson differed in opinion. He was more liberal than his father. His liberal beliefs can be seen in his effort to end elitist domination at the University of Princeton and later on in his presidency. His efforts to make Princeton less elitist were unsuccessful, so he pursued a new career. He became governor of New Jersey and eventually became the 28th president of the United States of America. He served two terms, starting in 1913 and ending in 1921. His foreign policy was defined by WWI, the major event during his presidency.
Wilson’s claim to fame is his reluctancy to enter the war. He unsuccessfully tried to keep America out of the war. He wanted to keep America neutral. America was still recovering from the recession and he thought it best that America stayed out of it. Many Europeans supported his idea. However, the Allied leaders the represented the Europeans, had different opinions. The idea was attractive but they doubted if it could actually be put into place. They thought the ideas were to democratic and idealistic to be pulled off. Lloyd George, the prime minister of Britain, had similar war aims that were less radical and more realistic. One of his fourteen points that was successful was the League of Nations. The League of Nation was established at the Paris Peace Conference in 1920. The League of Nations was essentially a group of countries that banned together to maintain “world peace”. The Allied powers were the first members and eventually more countries joined.
