The Harlem Renaissance and its Writers From the beginning of the 1920’s to the mid 1930’s, there was a period of literary, artistic, and intellectual movement that redefined African-American culture. This period was also nicknamed, the “new negro movement”. The movement was centered in Harlem, New York, while many other locations were similarly influenced.
