The Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) is an educational guidance framework and a programme of study built up of outcomes and experiences. Implemented in 2010 it supports from 3yrs- 18yrs. The CfE provides teachers and practitioners with a guide to base their activities on while making sure to hit all these outcomes and experiences to allow the child to have a high-quality learning journey, this ensures progression, development fulfilment and support. Prepares children with the knowledge of how to cope in the world as they grow, get jobs and live their life. The Foundation Stage, Early Years: Learning Through Play indicates that “Well-planned and well-resourced play activities which allow for progression in a child’s thinking and understanding can provide the context in which these principles become the reality for all our children.” Additionally, Bruce talks about the importance of play in a young child’s development and how they learn best within principle no.4 “Children learn best when they are given appropriate responsibility, allowed to make errors, decisions and choices, and respected as autonomous learners.” Consequently, children need to do these things to learn for example free play allows this. Bruce also made 12 features of play which these elevate her thoughts of how play impacts children, “play transforms children because it helps them to function beyond the here and now. They can become involved in more abstract thinking about the past, using the past, and into imagining the future, or alternative ways of doing things.
