Did you know that mariachi music originated from Jalisco? “Guadalajara (in Jalisco) hosts an annual May Cultural Festival, featuring musical concerts, theatrical performances, art exhibits and games. Each September brings the International Mariachi Encounter, which draws mariachi bands and their fans from all over the world. Jalisco’s diversity, beautiful landscapes and cultural traditions make it one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations. The state has introduced the world to the traditions of mariachis, tequila, the Ballet Folklórico, the Mexican Hat Dance, charros and sombreros.” In specific, Mariachi bands are usually composed of instruments like the guitar, the violin, vihuelas, guitarron and trumpets. One of these hobbies is mariachi bands and their musical creation that represent a different musical genre. What makes Mariachi bands stand out is how the individuals that are part of this group dress up, their style of music, and most importantly, their significance to the Mexican culture. Mariachi bands have revolutionized from being for only men in poor clothing to both genders in this elegant signature uniform. The Virgin Mary of Guadalupe has granted many miracles to those that believe in her. The Virgin Mary’s birthday was determined by the last time she appeared to Juan Diego, which was December 12th, 1531. Jesus Christ was also another important icon to Catholicism and Christianity, in which Mexicans believed in. According to the bible, Jesus Christ was chosen to be our savior.     The standard instruments in the Son Jarocho include: the jarana jarocho, the requinto jarocho and the Veracruz harp. The most important instrument is the jarana jarocho that is an eight-string guitar. The requinto jarocho has four stings and they are plucked with a plastic pick. The Veracruz harp has 36 strings and is non-pedal harp. Each instrument is highlighted in a solo. There are also manicos that are patterns like the rasqueos, redobles, and apagones that are incorporated with the jarana playing. The Son Jarocho has a rapid tempo, ¾ meter. Both for Carlos and his family. The eight-year old Carlos quickly left the violin for the guitar, studying and emulating the sounds of B.B. King, T-Bone Walker and John Lee Hooker. Soon he was being asked to join local bands like the T.J.'s, where he added a unique touch and feel to his own renditions of all the great songs of the 1950's. As he continued to play with different bands along the busy Tijuana Strip, he not Page Two only started to perfect his style and sound, but actually started bringing home enough money to really help his family. His future looked promising. In 1960, Carlos' family moved to San Francisco while Carlos stayed in Tijuana for another year to make extra money until his family was settled. However, he soon found himself amid the multicultural atmosphere of San Francisco, with all of its diverse musical styles.
