2. "It is participants in a culture who give meaning to people, objects and events" (Kang, 1997: 980). How do signs communicate shared sets of meanings and values within fashion systems? Using the theories of semiotics, analyse two fashion films, photographs or advertisements as evidence for your answer.

How do signs communicate shared sets of meanings and values within fashion systems? through the use of semiotics. Throughout the fashion system a variety signs are communicated and it important to understand how the signs can be interpreted due to them having shared sets meanings and values. As fashion is media based it means it can show signs through a range of mediums such as film's, photograph or advertisement. As of the shared meaning and values the fashion system use this to advertising advantage to draw consumer to buy a product the signs can also be use to shock and cause contrives which can be used as a positive and negative to help in the fashion system.
Semiotics is one theory that can help to explain how signs can be interpreted in fashion through the use of media as semiotics are concerned with everything that can be taken as a sign(Umberto Eco, 1976).

Semiotics theory was founded by Saussure he defined “semiotics as a science that studies the life of signs within society” (Saussaure 1974:16) and it would focus on science and what laws govern them. Semiotics show that any object can be interpreted as a symbol whether it was intended to be. Saussure put forward a model made up of two parts called signifier and the signified.
