At some point in everyone’s life they come across a life changing obstacle, also known as their everest. In the book, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, the climbers Jon Krakauer, Rob Hall, sherpas, and many other people, climb Mount Everest with hopes of summiting. For them this is their everest. When the word everest is said the automatic thought is Mount Everest, but in this case everest holds the definition of a tough obstacle that is overcome because of the work and effort that was put into it to get through it. This was most likely the toughest obstacle the climbers have ever faced, and is obviously a life changing event. My everest on the other hand is much different than climbing Mount Everest. My everest is more centered around my life when I was about eight years old.…

Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

The Civil War was the bloodiest war the United States has ever fought - killing over 620,000 Americans and causing more destruction than any other war. Long standing conflicts and disagreements made the violent war seem inevitable years before it happened, and led to it becoming a major turning point in US history. Americans have struggled with sectionalism since the colonial days, as seen in the issue of slavery and states rights, and the passing of documents and compromises such as the Articles of Confederation in an attempt to unify the colonies. During the period around the Civil War, the universal idea of manifest destiny reignited sectionalism between states because of arguments over whether to admit new lands in the West as slave or…

As you go down this hill, your momentum only goes up until you get to the bottom and are forced to stop unless you want to end up in the middle of Lake Michigan. We spent a few minutes at the bottom of the hill to look around, take pictures, and to catch our breaths. Then we turned around and looked at the climb that we were about to take on. Three of Mary’s brothers were already on their way up the hill when she and I started our twenty minute climb. Mary started to get ahead of me because I slowed down to try to count how many steps it would take me to get to the top of the hill. As I reached two hundred steps I looked behind me only to realize that I was only about half way up. This climb became very challenging because of the steepness of the hill and the shifting of the sand every step. As I started to drip sweat, I was reaching the top and felt pretty accomplished. I was taking a break every fifty to sixty steps to catch my breath for a moment, and was determined not to lose count of my…

Today, the United States and the world owes a lot to Ancient Rome for numerous things. It may not seem like it, though, because how could a world run by technology have anything in common with anything that happened a couple thousand years ago? Well, among some things, many of the same building styles are used, and ancient aqueducts paved the way for the modern reservoirs and heating systems. The spread of Christianity also began during Roman times, and nobody can deny that that isn’t a huge part of American society today.…

The hardest part of any journey is the first step. Nonetheless, part of life is clearing your own path, making your own map, finding life's meanings, and defining your philosophy or world view, the next hardest part of the journey, once you've found your truth, is living it every day walking your talk.…

We had arrived to a split point of the trail, the left path would take us through the rocky part of the peak, were we would have to climb huge boulders, walk by high cliffs and narrow trails. One of them was called “el…
