Courage is a powerful ability that can help those at the right time and place. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird there are many chapters who display the theme of courage. Atticus Finch shows the gift of determination through the book. Secondly, Mrs. Dubose who has a morphine addiction fights with endurance and firmness. In contrast, Boo Radley who has the fortitude to fight a man with a knife is a heroic and a fearful moment in the novel. Given theses points Atticus, Mrs Dubose, and Boo Radley are all a symbol of courage.
Atticus Finch showed determination by fighting for Tom Robinson’s freedom. Atticus is a hardworking man who does not let go of this case easily. Even though Atticus and his family are surrounded by racism they still manage to ignore the negativity and push through, in hope of Tom Robinson's freedom. Dubose appears as a grumpy person who has nothing nice to say. After Mrs Dubose passed away Atticus tells Jem that she is a morphine addict. She became more sick and is not going to live as long. At the same time she was determined to break her addiction before she died. Jem reading to Mrs. Dubose helped pass time for her. “Mrs Dubose won, all ninety eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and to nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew”(Lee 254). As much as she is sick, she fought the pain and so she dies free of her addiction. Even though she is really sick and knew that the morphine took the suffering away she instead took the pain. To summarize, Mrs. Dubose did not die without a fight. It definitely took all of her courage to go without morphine. All in all she is a really brave
