Stars Aren’t Shining: Symbolizes darkness and midnight. Banquo is struggling against ambition. When Banquo talks to his son Fleance he notices Stars Aren’t Shining. One quote form Scene 1 mentions that He prays for angels to “restrain in me the cursed thoughts that nature gives way to in repose”, (2, 1, 7-8) which symbolized midnight.
Sleep: Symbolizes innocence, purity, and peace of mind. when Macbeth said wicked dreams abuse, it relates back to the dream that Banquo had when he dreamt of the three sisters meaning that the power of the witches would cause Macbeth to abuse The Curtain’d sleep which was in scene 1 symbolized the sleeping King Duncan in Macbeth’ castle . When Banquo is open about the troubling “dreams” the witches have inspired in him. This explains that Banquo has been troubled by dreams of the weird sisters. One quotes mentions that when he murders Duncan, Macbeth thinks he hears a voice “Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep”-the innocent sleep, (2, 2, 34) this quote symbolizes innocence because it shows that Macbeth is not guilty of what he’s done to Duncan, committing a crime. …show more content…
Nature Seems Dead: Symbolizes weather.
From the thunder and lightning that accompany the witches’ appearances to the terrible storms that rage on the night of Duncan’s murder. As Macbeth gets closer to the murder, nature starts to go haywire; behaving unpredictably. Darkness during the day, owls killing hawks, horses eating on another. Further mayhem in nature is caused by the murder of Duncan and destruction of the natural order. These violations of the natural order reflect corruption in the moral and political orders. One quote which relates to this is when Macbeth sees a bloody dagger floating in the air. He can’t grasp it, and can’t decide whether it’s a phantom or his imagination. This shows that Macbeth has no prediction to nature when he sees
it.
Bloody Dagger: Symbolizes blood. The bloody dagger shows an image to kill and to show us the intimate relationship that Duncan and Macbeth share with each other.
Bloodstained: A bloodstained hand symbolizes guilt. At the times when both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feel most guilty is when they despair that they will never be able to wash-the blood- their guilt form their hands. Macbeth is anguished: knowing the consequences of his murder. Hands now as bloody: When Lady Macbeth says: “a little water clears us of this deed” (2, 2, 65). This shows that she is naive; showing an excessively simple and trusting view thinking water can wash away her guilt.
Visions and Hallucinations: A number of times in Macbeth, Macbeth sees or hears strange things: the floating dagger, the voice that says he’s murdering sleep, and Banquo’s ghost. As Macbeth he wonders about the dagger. Just as nature goes haywire when the normal natural order is ruptured, Macbeth’s own mind does the same when it is forced to fight against itself.
