Young girls go through many different physical changes that may or may not make them proud. They want to be just like everyone else and look their best. There has been many controversial issues about the impact of the Barbie doll. In 1945, Barbie was founded by Ruth and Elliot Handler of Mattel Creations. The idea of Barbie was inspired by Ruth’s daughter who grew up playing with paper dolls. After many years of trial and error, on the making of the perfect Barbie, Ruth finally introduced the first, ever made Barbie doll. They think this because they view them as having the perfect life, perfect hair and skin and etc. They also view Barbie as having very high standards. Some also believe Barbie is unrealistically successful. This means that she can get a job at the snap of her fingers, without having to accomplish any school beforehand. “How popular and perfect she is, and so naturally these girls are beginning to want to be just like Barbie, happy and perfect all the time, which starts many of them on their way to eating disorders” (citation). This is true, Barbie can cause a serious disorder. This disorder is known as body dysmorphic disorder, aka BDD. This disorder is a medical illness. The symptoms sometimes cannot be entirely explained by a real physical disorder. These girls, with this mental disorder, do not find themselves attractive. Most of the time they try to improve their appearance because of how society is. “An unrealistic idea about the way we should look or what we should weigh is not the only thing that causes eating disorders. In fact, eating disorders are complex conditions that probably have numerous contributing factors” (citation). In other words, although BDD is a serious condition, there are other contributing factors on why women have eating disorders. There eating disorder does not necessarily come from playing with a doll. This disorder could simply be hereditary. This means you were born into it and you can get special treatments to cure it. Another factor on why women have eating disorders could be cultural pressures. In order to fit in with certain groups some women want to be as lean and fit as possible. They do not want to be different, the odd ball, from the group. All in all, people with BDD can get medical, nutritional and counseling treatments. For these reasons above, the banning of Barbie should be thought out more thoroughly and she should not be banned
