easy going attitude and the maturity and emotions he showed during the trial. The novel also had interesting antagonists, the Ewell clan were not the greatest group of people but they were certainly interesting. The way they lived was very surprising and interesting. It was sad to see how those children grew up and the reader somewhat sympathized with Mayella. In addition to the interesting characters the book has a very interesting setting that adds to the plot, the novel takes place in the 1930’s in the middle of the great depression and just before the start of World War II, this time period was very important in history this creates an interesting setting that shows what the world was like at the time and the challenges faced. The novel also caused the reader to think about racism and inequality and in a real way without any censoring. It showed what the world was like and the injustice many faced. It also causes the reader to reflect on any personal prejudices they may have or have had and causes them to think about the inequality faced in the world around them.
The novel also had moments that left me speechless and caught off guard, like when we learn Tom Robinson's side of the story or when the reader figures out what Bob has done to Mayella. They were sad moments that left the reader in a state of shock. Another moment that left me baffled was when Bob Ewell attack Jem and Scout. It surprised me to see that he would stoop so low to attack Jem and Scout. It angered me to see what a coward he was. I also think every reader of the novel can appreciate Scout’s ham costume. It nearly saved her life and was something interesting to picture, adding in a little lighthearted moment before the cowardly acts of Bob Ewell. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is an incredible novel that makes the reader think about equal rights and inequalities that have been faced overtime and in the present. The novel takes place during a important time period in history and has a great cast of characters that were dynamic and interesting to read about. It is one of my favorite novels and one that I believe everyone should read at least
once.
