Christianity plays a huge role in many a parishioner’s life, but does the influence of a man in the heavens make a positive impact on the world’s society? I’d argue not.
I believe that one of the main problems is the singularity of religion. Often Christianity is believed to be infallible, leaving no room for change or movement with the times sometimes leaving religion and those who follow them behind on social opinion. This may not be a problem in some cases as due to social media and the widespread use of television public opinion on major issues is not hard to find. However in a tiny minority of people the general acceptance on issues such as the access to abortion remain negative causing rifts in society and these rifts tend to encourage the stereotyping and discrimination of people on either side of this conflict. …show more content…
In the past religion was a huge and influential body who did have a hand in the crafting of the laws in many a country; including the United Kingdom.
It still plays a giant part in forming the opinions in the many that cross paths with God. However due to recent studies the number of people under the age of 25 who are devoted to a religion has almost halved in the past twenty years. This has laid way to the rise of the atheist, who now account for 34.6% of people’s stated religious backgrounds. Shouldn’t a groups impact on society be mirrored by their following in the population? Despite this the impact religion has on everyday life hasn’t changed. Why should a minority group control aspects of majority
life?
I have no problem with the principles of religion – don’t kill, don’t steal and don’t lie – in fact I believe that if everyone followed the core religious teachings the world would be a better place. However some people do not just follow the core religious teachings they have taken the bible literally. This involves the murder of people who are homosexual as can be seen in Leviticus 20:13; and the stoning to death of adulteress women (John 8:3-11). However adultery can be seen as re-marrying to many Catholics a practise that is now commonplace in our society yet to some it is a deadly sin. This leaves people believing that someone should be killed for doing some think many have no problem with. The lack of harmony is soon going to cause a catastrophe and it will be directly linked to the huge impact of religion on society and the single person.
Finally Christianity takes all its teachings and rules from the Bible, especially from the New Testament. This would be a great if the Bible was written by one person and was consistent throughout.
