People who had a drop of black blood in them as related to the ‘one drop rule’ were seen as less of a human being and even less valuable than animals. The fact that a person of ‘higher and superior’ race mingling, let alone having sexual relations with their slaves was seen as unthinkable and an unparalleled disgrace to the society and to their family. “Desiree’s Baby” is one of the many examples of how people of color were treated in America in those days, where interracial relationships were seen as a taboo punishable by societal stigma and exclusion, being the least, to even repercussions as serious as jail time or being lynched by a crowd who despises and detests what has been done. In this circumstance, Armand, is left with no other option but to do everything he can possible to get her out of the house, which again brings us to the point that a wife was not of much valuable in those days seeing as he treated her as a disposable creature that he could order out of the house with no remorse. At the end of the story, we discover that Armand is indeed the one with mixed blood as he discovers his own mother was of mixed heritage;his is where irony hits the fan, as Armand who had been behaving superior to his slaves would now be seen as one of them due to his race. The letter thanked Armand’s father for not disclosing her secret and keeping it dark from the boy that he was ever of mixed blood. This shows the length that people in their society would go to prevent anyone ever knowing that they had black blood in them,to the point of hiding their own
