How Does Detached Youth Work
Youth work began in the late 1700’s with Sunday school/ragged schools. Then in 1844 George William founded the YMCA. Williams was a drapery worker in London. He was concerned about the welfare of his fellow workers so he started a prayer and bible study group which soon grew and attracted men from across London.
1844 to 1849 saw the YMCA address others concerns of the young men working in cities. Public lecture and education classes were developed and reading and refreshments areas help the young men adjust to urban life.
Today the YMCA has over 58 million has over 58 million member in 119 countries worldwide. It has adapted to the changing needs of the young people. Today it works with young men and woman from all walks of life.

Example of engaging young people East Ayrshire Council: Leisure Development Services
Children and young people aged between 12 and 18 are targeted to receive alcohol and drug interventions via a network of night time and diversionary sport and activity programmes. Front line staff act as mentors and positive role models and are trained to deliver ABIs.
East Ayrshire council introduced the Drug/Alcohol Use Screening Tool (DUST) and worked with Barnardos Axis project to develop different communication approaches for the target group, which has been well received.

Prince’s Trust was founded in 1976 by The Prince of Wales. After he completed his duty in the Royal Navy he became dedicated to improving the lives of the disadvantaged young people in the UK and began the trust to deliver this commitment.
The Prince's Trust supports 13 to 30 years old who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion.
Many of the young people they help are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or have been in trouble with the
