Firstly, one effect Trump's candidacy has had in the United States is a rise in xenophobia and hate crimes. The news site newyorker.com reported that “since Donald Trump won the Presidential election, there has been a dramatic uptick in incidents of racist and xenophobic harassment across the country.” The Southern Poverty Law Center’s annual census of “extremist” groups claim that …show more content…
President Donald Trump has repeatedly denied that human-caused emissions cause global warming and climate change, describing it as "fictional” and a “hoax”. However, in its Fifth Assessment Report, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities have warmed our planet resulting in climate change (climate.nasa.gov). The Trump administration’s refusal to accept human-induced climate change can have great consequences for the future. The U.S.A’s withdrawal from collective agreements such as the Paris Agreement and Obama's Clean Power Plan policy will slow down the progress of emission reduction globally. Firstly, The United Nations Paris Agreement is an agreement aiming towards keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C as this would greatly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change. However, according to fastcomapany.com, in the next five years, greenhouse gases can cause a 1.5°C warming. The USA is also the world's second largest climate polluter (reuters.com). Therefore, if the world's superpower were to pull out of the accord, it could make it harder for the rest of the globe to stay on target. Secondly, Trump also wants to invest in the coal industry. He signed an executive order to abandon Obama’s Clean Power Plan, a policy which required states to regulate power plants and shift away from coal power (ucsusa.org). Furthermore, Donald Trump also wants to expand the use of fossil fuels. This along with “reviving” the coal industry will result in higher greenhouse gas emission. Some impacts that would be felt on a global scale because of the temperature rise are, according to NASA, rising sea levels, causing flooding and storm surges that threaten freshwater sources,
