Many people do not believe that they are courageous or have integrity, but when put to the test they find that they have more than they could ever imagine. A true test of character is having the ability to struggle with a difficult situation with integrity and courage in spite of fear. The perseverance of courage and integrity over fear is the central theme of the drama The Crucible by Arthur Miller.
When Elizabeth Proctor was accused of witchcraft by Abigail, and the men came to take her away to prison, she showed courage and integrity by going with them without a struggle. In Act II Elizabeth says to John, “I think I must go with them.”(1077). Her composed demeanor in this difficult situation shows her courage because she could have easily fought against them, but she chooses to be quiet and do as they said because she has to be strong for her children. The fear of being accused of being a witch makes Mary lie about seeing people with the devil, until John Proctor convinces her to tell the judge the truth. Mary says, “I cannot tell how, but I did, I-I heard the other girls screaming and you, your Honor, you seemed to believe them, and I-It were only sport in the beginning, sir but then, the whole world cried spirits, spirits, and I- I promise you, Mr. Danforth, I only thought I saw them but I did not.” (1095). It took courage and integrity to tell the truth because if Abigail could convince the court that Mary was lying then Mary could be hung for false accusations.
