Fate is the predetermination of the events occurring inevitably in future. Macbeth by Shakespeare written in 1606 is a tragic play where fate leads to the downfall of the tragic hero- Macbeth. A series of unusual events occur inevitably in Macbeth’s life due to his fate which leads to his downfall, thus making the play a tragedy of fate. In Macbeth the greetings of the witches, Lady Macbeth as his wife influencing him to murder King Duncan and Macduff’s existence to bring the end of Macbeth are the inescapable events controlled by fate that leads to the downfall of the tragic hero.
It is Macbeth’s fate that he encountered with the witches and heard their prophecies of him, which leads to his downfall. The three witches from their conversation is proven evil and when these witches meet Macbeth and Banquo, they prophecies about Macbeth’s fate as well as Banquo’s. Macduff the Thane of Fife is an honorable man who is extremely loyal to his country. Macduff suspects Macbeth in the murdering of King Duncan so he flees to England to get the rightful heir of Scotland. When Macbeth meets the witches again, they tell him to be aware of Macdufff, Macbeth cannot be destroyed by men born of women and he would not be defeated until the Birnam wood move to Dunsinane hill. These seem impossible for Macbeth but it happens at the end of the play where Macduff was born through cesarean and the Birnam woods are actually carried by Malcolm’s troop to Dunsinane.
