and when he was sad, no one could be as sad as him or even feel his pain. Oedipus believes he is a god, better than everyone else, and that no one can be as sad as him which results with him suffering a downfall. Oedipus believes he was a god and that he was an ally with the gods, gods only have allies with other gods.
When Oedipus addresses the people of Thebes as “my children” it proves that he is their father and above them (Line 1). He makes everyone else believe that he is a god when he tells them “your prayers will be granted if you hear my words obediently,” he makes them believe that he can grant their wishes, which only gods are able to grant wishes (Line 213-214). Oedipus convinces the people in Thebes that he is a god. The people in Thebes all treat him as one and even call him “great and mighty Oedipus” (Line 40). god.. Since Oedipus thinks he is a god, he sees himself above everyone and thinks he is the best in the city of Thebes. Oedipus believes he is the most skillful person in Thebes, he talks so high about himself when he says, “o skill surpassing skill in a life much envied” (Line 371-372). Oedipus thinks he is the best when he “put an end to the sphinx” because out of all the people in Thebes he was the only one who could kill the sphinx (Line 385). Since Oedipus saves them from the Sphinx, the people of Thebes will “never charge him with evil” because he is their king and is a god to them (Line 501). On account of being the king of the city, he believes he is the best of all people. Since he believes that he is above everyone in the city, he thinks no one can ever feel the pain he feels.
He separates himself from the community when they have a problem by telling everyone it is “your plight,” This is not only their problem it is everyone is problem (Line 13). He tells the people “none of you are as beset as I,” but he had no reason to be sad (Line 59).Oedipus is not the one being hurt, the people in Thebes are the ones getting hurt. Overall, he thinks that he is above everyone, that he feels more pain than everyone else in the city, but he does not because the awful things happen to the people in the city and not just
him. Oedipus first sees himself as the god of the city because he thinks that he can grant their wishes. Second, he thinks he is better than everyone since he was the only one that could end to the sphinx. Lastly, he does not think anyone can ever feel his pain and be as sad as him. Oedipus is arrogant; all he thinks about is himself and how he is so much better than everyone else. He is not any better than anyone else and he is part of the reason that many of these problems occurred.
