Stephen Lewis starts the part with a personal synopsis and how he came to love Africa. In the wake of leaving school in 1960, and the upbeat shot excursion to an adolescent meeting, he could work through a wide scope of occupations and nations for a long time in Africa. At that point he was requested that by Tommy Douglas come back to Canada to help with the new NDP party. He returned there commonly amid his discretionary vocation. It was in the 60's when pre-AIDS Africa was "a mainland of essentialness, gowth, and limitless desire."…

During January of 2013, a fourteen year old boy by the name of James Persyn took the risk of letting a rape victim into his home. The lady was in danger, so he let her into his home, which was a huge risk. A series of chaotic events followed, yet James, his two siblings and even the rape victim made it out just okay. James Persyn is an important person who portrayed a “hero”. Most people dream of being courageous, or a here. Though these people have not yet been tested in dangerous situations. In order to be courageous, one must be mentally, and morally strong enough to venture, perservere, and withstand danger no matter how afraid or how difficult the situation is. To be courageous, one must be like James Persyn. James is courageous because he risked danger, is brave and overall did the right thing.…

Through Douglass’ use of example which appeal to all three, the reader can find a substantial amount examples which appeal to pathos, which helps Douglass to establish not only a connection with the reader, but to emit emotion from them as well.…

Ambrose Bierce’s, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, is the story of a want-to-be hero. The main character, Peyton Farquhar, cannot participate in the war, and has to stick to just being a farmer. Bierce puts a spin on what it is to be a hero in this story, and what happens to them. In his story through the eyes of Farquahr, one must be a soldier, do something spectacular, and then make away back home to the soldiers family, to be a hero. These are the three parts of what it means to be a hero; although Farquhar interestingly enough, never gets to be a hero. In an unexpected turn of events, Farquhar is actually dies in the seconds after the Union soldier drops the floor from under Farquhar.…
“The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst shows that the narrator of the story has tragic flaws and being embarrassed of his disabled brother so he teaches him to walk. This short story is about the narrator trying to teach his disabled brother Doodle to walk because he is embarrassed to be related to someone who cannot walk. The narrator eventually strains his brother to do more than walking. This short story supports the quote because the narrator is taking pride into training his little brother to walk because he is embarrassed to have a brother who can’t walk. The narrator pushes his brother into using his legs and walk. In the story it switches from person to person from person to self. The author’s use of Characterization and conflict help to set the mood of the story. These literary elements help set the mood of the story which makes it more interesting to read as well as showing we can get too much pride over something. In conclusion an imperfect narrator or one with tragic flaws makes the story more interesting to the reader. It also reveals truth that people do not think of the consequences of what they are doing.…
Douglass uses metaphors, symbolism, and polysyndetons to give a description of what his life was like during his time as a slave. Douglass is able to achieve this because he possessed a desire to learn when he was still a slave and he pressed on despite the difficulties at hand. As a result, Douglass has become one of the most well-known abolitionist speakers and brilliant former-slave writers in African-American history. In this story, Douglass uses his impressive writing skills to recount his experiences as a slave and during his escape to…
Over time there have been many men and women who have received the title “hero.” They likely have been named by their bravery, strength, and willingness to give up their own comfort, if not their own life, to benefit the wellbeing of others. Every hero differs in many ways. Each one of them has his own story of heroism. The tragic hero survives in our literature.…

In his book, Douglass details his life as he grows up and learns to read and write. With this education, he becomes knowledgeable about slavery and is eventually inspired to escape. The man from Snowy River is here seen as the underdog, who battles against the odds to prove himself. This is shown by the words “long and tiring gallop” and “you will never do.” This use of emotive language sets the Man from Snowy river up as the underdog. However the underdog proceeds to become the champion, the iconic sporting hero. “The stock men tell the story of his ride” is an example which illustrates this. This use of use of emotive language creates an almost mythical and legendary view of the…
The book so far is based around the story of an Italian boy named Louie Zampernini and his family. Louie’s father and mother moved from Italy and brought themselves up in a half-acre field with a one-room shack. “If it was edible, Louie stole it.” This is an idea brought up constantly in these chapters about Louie’s daring and witty attempts and successes at stealing, fighting, and causing most other kinds of mischief. The book also says that “Confident that he was clever, resourceful and bold enough to escape any predicament, he was almost incapable of discouragement. When history carried him into the war, this resilient optimism would define him.” A foreshadowing of the next part of the book when he is brought into the Army Air Corps. As someone interested in the armed forces I can identify with that last quote because there are many occasions when I have seen people bring with themselves their outstanding qualities into the military, this is something that I hope I can do with traits that will better me in service.…
