How Does Galahad Present The Character Of Arthur

According to Merriam-Websters the word Galahad means one who is pure, noble, and unselfish.(Galahad Merriam-Webster) Sir Galahad, one of Arthur’s most famous knights, fits the description to a T. He appears in constantly in Arthurian legend. He is Arthur’s holiest knight and the one destined to be the grail seeker. His genealogy reflects this and he is descended from King David. As a part of that lineage he is also one of Arthur’s most honorable knights which allows him to see the grail. Galahads father was Lancelot and his mother was Elaine of Benwick/Banioc. From Lancelot’s mother’s side he is a descendent of King David of the bible. (Joe) His lineage changes based on which work one is reading. In pre vulgate works he is rarely, and Percival has the lineage he has, if ever mentioned but in the post vulgate works his is very clearly important because of his lineage and Percival is relegated to being a supporting character. When he was brought to Camelot he was able to sit in the Siege Perilous. The Siege Perilous was a chair that whoever sat in it would be the finder of the Holy Grail. Even though he is Lancelot’s illegitimate son he was raised by nuns and so from a young age was taught to honor and fear God and to be pure. Galahad’s arrival in the court of Arthur and his seating in Siege Perilous heralded the beginning of the grail hunt buy the Knights of the Round Table.
