George loved school and was excited to go every single day.
George’s positive attitude helped him all throughout his life on many occasions. When his dad was talking about him going off on his own he was sad to leave all that he knew, but George was also excited for what would come next. Unlike many of us, George never got to go to school as a kid. He stayed home and worked on his farm. When he saw his siblings go to school it made him feel sad but he knew where he was needed, so he was okay with it. His positive attitude helped him cope with the bad parts of life and lead him to a better life.
Worrying about things can make life hard and stressful.
George never dwelled on things too much, whether they were big or small. In New Orleans he was supposed to catch a boat to India but he missed it. He didn't care too much, he just went back to Texas and moved on with his life even though he missed a big opportunity to see more of the world. In George's time, racism was bad, and he wasn't treated equally to a white man. On his way to Cleveland George found out that he had gotten cheated out of his money when buying train tickets in Marshall, the man gave him a one way ticket instead of a round trip. George could have retaliated, but he didn't worry too much because he knew that there wasn't a thing he could do about it. He worked around the situation. When George's daughter got cancer, he was saving money to build a new house, but she needed help with paying for the cancer treatment so that's what the money went for. Unfortunately his daughter died. George could have dwelled on the situation and thought about what else he could have done with his savings, but he didn't regret any of it. Worrying about things only takes the joy out of life and makes you overthink. George did not worry about things, or have regrets and that helped make his life a little more
simple.
We take so much in our life for granted, that George didn’t. One big thing he didn’t take for granted is school, George loved school. He didn't have the opportunity as a kid to go, so he never learned to read. When he did he finally got the opportunity, he never missed a day of school. He woke up extra early every morning because he was so excited for it. Another example that George didn't take things for granted is, he was always thankful for the food his mother made and thought about it often when he was away from home. Even though it wasn't much, he loved it. He was also always grateful for opportunities and the small things in life because he knew what it was like to not have anything.
George thought life is so good because he kept a positive attitude, didn't worry about things too much, and didn’t take things in life for granted. He always looked at the better side of things, especially in hard times, and that gave him a positive attitude. When bad things happened he never dwelled on them, he just moved on with his life and got over it, especially with things he couldn't change. George never took anything for granted because he knew what he had and was happy with it. We can learn a lot from the way George lived his life, and maybe it can help us look at life a little more positively.
