One of the more famous plot devices is Hamlet’s, the hero, hesitation to kill Claudius and take his revenge. This hesitation is due to the external and internal obstacles that Hamlet faces and overcomes throughout the play, such as his grief for his father’s murder and not enough evidence to accuse Claudius. This plot device is used to move along the story and it takes a while before Claudius is finally murdered. The first murder we’re told is Old Hamlet’s murder done by Claudius. This starts the whole play and Hamlet’ revenge plot. Then Hamlet kills Polonius by accident thinking it was Claudius. This makes us feel for Polonius but also see that this whole revenge plot has taken a negative toll on Hamlet. At the end when Laertes dies at Hamlet's hand, the audience feels relief and sadness. When Claudius dies, we feel relief that he has completed his revenge, however when Hamlet dies we feel he died a noble yet sad death.
Conspiracy is another major plot device in Hamlet. There is conspiracy happening between rosencrantz and guildenstern and the king to find out why Hamlet acts the way he does and to stop his mad actions. R&G side with the king to gain his favour by acting close to Hamlet even though they are spying on him for Claudius.
