Do you think Jem and Scout’s attitude and maturity change during the novel? Jem and Scout’s personalities were changed through the events of the novel and their father’s advice. This was hard on their father because their mom died when they were young. Jem learned about bravery and strength. Jem became more mature like his father. Scout became more like a girl. Jem and Scout learned that you cannot understand a person until you climb under his skin and walk around it.
Jem’s bravery and courage changed throughout the novel, starting in the first few chapters. At first Jem learned about bravery when his dad shot a mad dog on the street. Secondly he learned more about strength and hope from Miss Debouse’s addiction to morphine. Even though Miss Debouse new that she will die in no long time, she decided to get rid of her addiction. Thirdly he learned that he should not judge a person until you climb his skin and walk around it. He learned this through two situations, the first one was when they blamed Tom Robinson for hurting Mayella Ewell, The second one was when they used to think that Boo Radley is a bad person and a killer but at the end they …show more content…
discovered that he is a life saver and a white hearted person. Later on he became more mature like his father, for example when Scout found a roly-poly and told Jem that she will smash it Jem told her no because it didn’t harm her.
As you all know that Scout used to hang out with boys, solve problems like boys and also dress up like boys.
But at the first day for her at school she wore a dress even though she didn’t like it (She wore it because Aunt Alexandra told her). As time passed she began to act more like a girl and likening it, for example she stopped hanging out with boys, stopped dressing like them and stopped acting like them. She so smart because she knows how to read and write while her classmates don’t, she can also write cursive. Moreover, she understood that some people are good and some people are bad, some are fair and some are unfair. She only does or says whats in her heart without thinking about it, for example when Jem invited Walter Cunninghams at the dinner she made fun of the way he eats in front of
him.
There are several common things that Jem and Scout learn throughout the novel. One of them is that they should always do what they think is good and don’t think of what others will say. They learned that through two situations. The first one was when Atticus chose to hold Tom Robinson’s case and help him because he knew that he was innocent. While everyone else was against Tom Robinson just because he was black. The second one was when Scout was able to read and write and her teacher was mad at her and told her not to, but Atticus told her that she can still read with him every night a short story without telling the teacher. The other moral that they learned to not judge someone without knowing him or her very well.
In conclusion, throughout the novel Scout and Jem learned many things. The main thing they learned was you can never understand a person unless you climb under his skin and walk around it. In this Novel Tom Robinson and Boo Radley were symbolized as Mockingbirds.
