How Does Joanna Baillie Use Stage Directions
In order to stay the alpha male, it is common to see men fight for “property”. Sometimes this property can be material items, other times, it can be women. That being said, romantic forms of tension were common in immediate family members. This ideology is seen in the play “De Monfort” by Joanna Baillie that utilizes stage directions to assist in the narration of a tragedy. The play acted on the battle between sense and sensibility, focusing more on hidden emotions than exaggerated ones which is why it is crucial to read between the lines and explore the actions of each of Baillie’s characters.
