How Does John Q Show The Value Of Family

When situations are dire people react in way that he or she normally would not; that is often escalated when feelings are tied into the mix. Family provokes more deep feelings than nearly everything else in the world. Family is the cornerstone of life, and many sacrifice everything in order to provide a better life for their family. In the movie John Q, director Nick Cassavetes grasps the audience with feelings of empathy toward the family in urgent need. Since the film’s release in 2002, Denzel Washington (John Quincy Archibald), James Woods (Dr. Turner), Kimberly Elise (Denise Archibald), and Daniel E. Smith (Michael “Mike” Archibald), as well as other actors, capture the hearts of the audience. The film does this by displaying a family in a tragic situation that is the making of nightmares for many parents. John Q shows the importance of family throughout the film by the means of John’s actions, Denise’s loyal monologue, and John’s talk with his son Mike before surgery. Throughout the entirety of the film, John Archibald makes unacceptable and outrageous decisions. However, he makes those decisions for the sole reason that he was a desperate father with a dying son. John gives Michael words to live by and advice to live by for the rest of his life. His opening statement was for Mike to always listen to his mother because she is his best friend, and family is important. He goes on to tell Mike other things like how he should treat girls, to be true to his word, be kind, don’t smoke, and make money because life is easier if he does. It is this five minutes of the movie that thugs at the heartstrings the most because of how raw the emotion is and how meaningful the scene is.
