The very first sentence really drew me in with how the writer used such imagery. The clothes that they were wearing, and how it was described this was clearly taking place during the Civil War. The letter Edmond received and was reading, was upsetting him. The guys that were with him started to give him a hard time about the locket that they could see around his neck. I found it odd that someone would give a locket with the pictures of her parents in it to a boyfriend. It was later written that this was her only worthy possession, however I was still not convinced that this was her boyfriend and not her father, or maybe her brother. Again the writer tells you in detail what the girl was wearing and how it was a soft white gown, and he could feel the folds of fabric again, at this point I was thinking more like an Angel?
When he dreamt of the serpent coiling around his throat and then gliding away, I did not really read too much into that part of the story, other than it was more details from the author. It was not until the end that I realized that it was the locket being taken from him, while he was dreaming. It was such a powerful part of the story, and I was surprised because I was not thinking in that mind set at
