Literary Analysis: Story of an Hour
“When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills.” This line, by itself you may interpret as the character going through happiness or joy before he or she dies. However in Kate Chopin story “Story of an Hour”, this can be interpreted in a totally different way. The story conveys a variety of emotions and thoughts for the reader and the character. Kate Chopin use a plethora literary elements to write this short story. In the short story “Story of an Hour”, Kate Chopin uses suspense, foreshadowing, irony, and point of view to create an effective narrative.
Kate Chopin invokes different emotions for the reader throughout the story. In, “The Story of an Hour,” Chopin uses suspense as a method of anticipation when Mrs. Mallard goes to her room alone. What is she doing? What is she thinking? What emotions is she feeling? What thoughts are racing through her mind as she leaves her sister and Mr. Richards downstairs? The uncertainty and anxiety of Mrs. Mallard raises questions in the mind of readers about how they would react if they just heard a loved one died.
