War has no boundaries like age, family, and time of day. In the story,”The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty a sniper is stationed on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge and is tasked to “take out” any hostiles. While staking out, the sniper got shot in the arm by a fellow sniper and is faced many challenges in order to survive. Despite the Sniper’s skill, the sniper is realizing how war shows no mercy. When O’Flaherty wrote,“He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. . . He decided to take the risk . . . Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof.” Because war waits for no one, the sniper had to consider the consequences of smoking before he smoked. This shows how brutal war is, someone can’t…
The book I chose for the summative essay assignment was “American Sniper” by Chris Kyle. This book is about the courageous and thrilling memoir of the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. With over 100 documented kills during his four tours of duty, Chris Kyle has shed light on the dangerous brave life of a sniper. During his four tours of duty in the Iraq war he has come close to death and saved countless lives. He changed a lot from just being a country boy and became what he describes as a man. The war really changed his perspective on his civilian life. The significance of the Iraq war was to help free the Iraqi civilians of their dictator, Saddam Hussein, and the radical Islamic insurgents who terrorized the Iraqi’s after the fall of Saddam Hussein.…
One last technique the author uses to keep the reader’s attention is situational irony. Situational irony is when something entirely different than intended happens. Situational irony holds the reader’s attention by making a plot twist more entertaining. “‘We try to be civilized here.’ ‘Civilized? And you shoot down men?’”(75). This quote shows situational irony because General Zaroff is saying he’s civilized, but he hunts down men.…
The sniper is a short story writen by Liam O’Flaherty the genre is suspense. It is about a Republican Sniper that is fight in the Irish civil war. He uses increasing pace, decreasing pace, and rapid succession of conflicts to create suspense. The author uses timing words to create suspense.…
Irony is an event that the reader expects to happen, but is the quite opposite, usually for a funny or dramatic effect. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Peyton Fahrquar is sentenced to death by hanging by the federal military during the civil war for attempting to burn a bridge they were controlling. In this short story, Fahrquar jumps off of the bridge with the noose around his neck and his hands and feet tied, but he still lives. This is an example of irony because the reader will expect him to die instantaneously, but suddenly it was as if the rope grew longer and he fell into the water. As he ‘escapes’, sharpshooters aim and fire, but not a single round will touch him. At the end of the short story, it explains how Fahrquar runs all night to get to his family, just as…
A friend of Rat’s, Curt Lemon, gets killed; about a week later, he decides to write his dead friend’s sister a letter to tell her what a great brother she had, and to tell her that he was a true comrade and hero. Two months pass, and Curt’s sister never writes Rat back. Frustrated about this, Rat spits at the ground and calls her a “dumb cooze.” The narrator says how sometimes a true war story cannot be believed, how a true war story is impossible to tell, and a true war story cannot be made abstract or rendered to simple generalizations because war is too ambiguous. The narrator remembers how Curt Lemon died, and how he and Jensen are ordered to retrieve the body parts from a…
In the story “The sniper,” the use of dramatic and situational irony brings out the theme of war knowing no limit. Irony helps the theme of this story by making the reader notice the details that are important in the story. Dramatic irony is shown when the sniper “considers whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous. He decided to take the risk.”…
Over the course of Liam O’Flaherty’s “The Sniper,” the reader experiences what it is like to be in a war. He reveals to the reader the struggles of being in a war, such as the physical trials not to mention the emotional turmoil that…
In "The Sniper" tone and mood is used to create a startling factor, intense scenes, and visualizations. One excellent sxample is the scene that he fakes his death. The way Liam O' Flaherty uses tone and mood makes the story on edge, startling, and suspenseful. Once the sniper finds his targets and loohjkghkks though his scope it stirs intense fellings.…
His enemy had been hit”(O’Flaherty 208). This quote explains how the sniper felt a sense of relief as he pulled the trigger killing his enemy escaping the chance of being killed. Similarly, in the poem, Hardy portrayed the main character as a determined man willing to kill in order to survive. “But ranged as infantry/ And staring face to face/ I shot at him as he at me/ And killed him in my place”(Hardy 5-9). This quote is showing how as the two sides lined up across from each other in battle, he was faced with the decision of whether or not to kill his enemy. Although there were similarities, there were also many differences throughout the plot. For instance, in “The Sniper”, O’Flaherty described how the main character’s curiosity led him to the discovery that he killed his brother. “He wondered did he know him… Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”…
Irony constructs an atmosphere of suspense within O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” The story follows a family planning a road trip while a convicted killer, a man known as the “Misfit,” has escaped prison. Upon this discovery, the family altered their road trip’s destination to avoid the suspected path of the Misfit. However, as situational irony goes, the family…
Man vs man, self and sacrifice these characters face their own conflict but try to get in control and solve. 3 of these story’s conflicts are similar and different. The main characters all face a problem with society and inner problems. The similar conflicts the 3 stories have incoming is making sacrifice. In the story “Sniper” the Sniper is having a battle with another sniper across the road.…
This essay was written by Thomas Kendall II I will be talking about the Sniper that written by Liam O'Flaherty. This author believes that war can change a family and destroy a family. If I was that sniper I would’ve probably taken my life in my own hands. I know it's wrong take my own life but I would hurt so bad I couldn’t stand it.…
The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is composed of character, setting and conflict. One of the critical themes in the short story is irony, which plays a major role in the story. There is irony in the setting, a remote jungle island, the conflict, murder verses hunting, and the characters, General Zaroff who is a crazed man-hunter and Mr. Rainsford, his prey.…
Moreover, I noticed that as I continue to read, my mind would…
