Pap Huck’s dad is an alcoholic and abusive which lead him to live a miserable life. Mark Twain calls upon his alcoholism
Huck clearly portrays Pap as an irresponsable dad, and making the readers think he comes back only after his treasure. The worst quality his dad has is his addiction to alcohol. His problem is what really affects their relation, and what makes him take many wrong desitions. Huck has no relation with his father. He is afraid of him, his addiction has made him take several wrong desitions which puts in danger his son. If the reason of his mistreatment to his son is tracked it all comes to blame his alcohol addiction, this brings him to the wantigns of more alcohol but he has no money and knows his son has. Im sure that Pap loves his son deep inside but his addiction doesnt let him be who he totally is.…
In The Adventures of Huck Finn Mark Twain uses satire and irony to teach an overall theme. An example of irony and satire being used in the story is when Jim and Huck are floating in the raft and Jim is anxious to find Cairo. this is because, as Huck mentions, “he'd be a free man the minute he seen it, but if he missed it he would be in slave country again and no more show for freedom” (88). This is an example of satire because it exposes society's long-held belief that once in a state without slavery Jim will be free. Though he may be free from slavery, he is not free from society's perceptions of him. He is still subject injustice because he is an African American man. It is also ironic because it brings people to their senses that Jim will…

During the mid-1800’s there was many “imperfections” in the world, and Samuel Clemens better known as Mark Twain decided to write a book to ridicule some problems concerning religion, greed, civilization, romantic literature, and Melodramatic art. Huckleberry Finn goes on a very complex and intense journey which helps him build a perspective on life as opposed to the ones dictated by those older than him. Throughout Huck encounters situations with problems that mimic actual problems in Twain’s world. Twain makes them look extremely pointless and senseless.…
Not long after Pap finds Huck in the house of the Widow Douglas, he begins to scold Huck for living a “sivilized” life. He tells Huck, “If I catch you about that school I’ll tan you good” (Twain 30). Pap aims to have complete control over his son because he needs Huck’s money to buy alcohol. He clearly feels that Huck’s education will interfere with the pursuit of his own selfish…
A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift fits the satire definition because throughout the whole short story the man is proposing real life problems in society and turning them sarcastic. He uses sarcasm to emphasize how well he believes his ideas would benefit his country, Ireland. For example when he talks about the Irish eating their babies due to overpopulation. This wouldn't be an effective way to end the problem but instead people should stop having…
To begin, Pap Finn is the embodiment of the defects within modern civilization; the purpose of his presence is to provide stark juxtaposition from the good in Huck’s life. Pap is a horrendous excuse for a father, Huck cites that he “hadn’t been seen for more than a year, and that was comfortable for [Huck]” (Twain 22). No child should be satisfied with the absence of their parent. The fact that Huck is, raises a red flag for the reader; it indicates neglect and abuse. Pap was also a thief,…
Earlier on, the book brings in Huck's father. An angry abusive drunk that leaves until he finds out Huck has money and comes back in to the story exclusively to mooch off his son so he can drown his shameless self with booze. As we get to know Pap he very blatantly needs to drink, so he tells Huck “I've been in town two days, and I haint heard nothing but about you bein' rich. I heard about it away down the river, too. That's why I come. You git me that money tomorrow- I want it.” (Twain 20) This man shows himself to be an ignorant racist against anyone…
A satire is something that explores a serious social issue, it is made in a humorous way, and it is used to make a point. The SNL skit is a satire because it makes fun of the Pepsi commercial.…
Satire is the use of humor, irony, or exaggeration to reveal or ridicule human vices. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain uses a variety of satire to call out human ignorance. He uses his main character a 14-year boy from before the Civil War as his catalyst to show a child’s innocence in a twisted society. When Huckleberry Finn fakes his death and runs away from his alcoholic father to Jackson Island, where Finn finds Jim a previous slave to his adopters that tried to civilize Finn. In the book, the reader can see Finn is growing in his adventure as he helps Jim a runaway slave escape to the north. The satire is used to show all the vices of the civilized world like slavery, being civilized, and society itself.…
Growing up and witnessing pap being a drunk had a huge impact on Hucks moral development. Huck frightened to see pap for the first time says “I used to be scared of him all the time, he tanned me so much I reckoned I was scared now too” (pg.18). Family has a big impact on a person’s life. Depending on someone’s morals and up bringing it can shape a person differently. Huck voices his straggles about pap demanding money and being an alcoholic “He took it and bit it to see if it was good, and then he said he was going down town to get some whiskey” (pg.21). Hucks father coming into his life in such bad shape is hard to deal with. But raising above all the negative energy is key to not falling down the wrong path. Even though Hucks family was not helpful, his other surroundings are a big impact with learning good morals.…
This shows how Huck felt towards Pap unhealthy habits, when it came to raising him as a child. He was very uncomfortable and troubled by the conditions he had to live in on a day to day basis. Pap would even steal from Huck, and Huck became very aware of his fathers’ wrong doings that it started to push him…
A good quote by Mark Twain is “I do not wish any reward but to know I have done the right thing.” This stood out because Huck realizes the right thing to do is give Jim a chance and not just treat him awful like the others. Huck actually gets to know Jim and realizes he is a good guy. So the way that Huck is compared to his dad is quite different but that just shows that not all sons are like their fathers. That concludes that statement about Huck becoming a better man than his Pap turned out to…

Lord Bryon once said, “Fools are my theme, let satire be my song”. A satire is a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision,or ridicule (dic.com). A well recognized satire is George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Orwell wrote this allegorical novella in England when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain both among the people and government. George Orwell wrote Animal Farm to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole, thus addressing the downfall of the Russian Revolution which was caused by its corrupt leaders and ignorant citizens.…
