How Does Melinda Show Courage
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. In Speak there are many little acts of courage by many different people but I believe the main character Melinda had the most big and small acts of courage. In this essay I will talk about why I believe she does and why I think courage is important in the ways it comes into this book. The first reason I think Melinda has the most courage is when Melinda finally said no to Heather. When she said no to Heather she found courage to speak up and use her voice. “No, I haven’t decided on colors yet. That’s not what I mean, I mean no, I won’t help you” (Anderson 179). It’s important for her to find courage and speak up for herself otherwise she was always be stuck doing things for Heather that she never really wanted to do and Heather never really appreciated what Melinda did for her. When Melinda found the courage to say no to Heather it could’ve also give her a little bit more confidence because now she knows that she has a voice that she has control of. …show more content…
When she was in the closet getting her stuff Andy came in and did things Melinda didn't want him to do. She yelled no “NNNOOO!!!” (Anderson 194). Then protected herself with a piece of glass from the mirror she broke “I reach in and wrap my fingers around a triangle piece of glass. I hold it to Andy Evans neck. He freezes. I push hard enough to raise one drop of blood” (Anderson 195). If she didn't find the courage to use her voice to yell and tell him to stop and also to break a mirror to cut Andy then Andy could have done bad things that would’ve ruined Melinda and make her feel worse than she does already. Even though Melinda was scared and venerable at the moment she still found courage to do those things to save

Harper Lee proves what she believes courage to be in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Many characters show they have courage in the novel such as Jem, Atticus, and Tom Robinson. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the 1930s where uncourageous white people, such as Mayella and Bob Ewell, take advantage of their superiority over the black people. When someone mistakenly thought that they were courageous in the novel, their misery increased. Courageous people are brave enough to put others before themselves and only fear what will happen if they do not. In To Kill a Mockingbird courage is defined as a person who shows respect to their peers and stands up for themselves without harming others, not an arrogant person who brings other people down to feel good about themselves.…

I was absolutely lost at this point because I thought that I knew where the story was going. Although Andy was there because Melinda had told Rachel about what had happened at the party that night. As Andy locked the door Melinda turned around and was scared. He tried to rape her again but Melinda screamed and fought back this time. As she was screaming the lacrosse team heard her and managed to get Andy off of her. On the final day of school she is sitting in art class doing her yearlong project. When she finishes she turns it in to Mr. Freeman who gives her an A. Mr. Freeman tells her that he knows she has been through a lot. Melinda feels good talking to Mr. Freeman so she decides to tell him the whole story about what happened that night at the party. The ending to Speak took a wild turn at the end but overall was a good read. After reading this book you see a totally different person. At the beginning she was really shy and tried to distance herself from other people. Now she is not shy at all, her friends all like her now. The transformation that happened during this story was breathtaking. I think this book is for everyone. If you haven't read Speak I recommend you…

The first reason why courage is key is because it saves lives. Not only it saves lives of the person surviving, but it saves his or her peers also in the dangerous situation. For example in the story The Seventh Man Two children witness a horrible typhoon which put him in a dangerous situation. The kids were playing by the beach when one of the kids saw the storm coming. Instead of informing his friend that the typhoon was about to hit them he runs away and his friend sadly dies from the giant wave. “Instead of helping him I found myself running away from him.” this is was the kids words that he wrote in the story. Courage could have saved that kid, but fear took control of the friend that should have saved him.…
